Panoramic Views of Santiago From Cerro San Cristobol
The best place to see Santiago is from the top of Cerro San Cristobl. More than a great viewpoint, it's the largest park in the city with a healthy trail system to get you around. And a cable car if you don't like to hike.
I stayed in Santiago in the Lastarria region. That in and of itself was a beautiful place, but it is also just about a mile away from the funicular that quickly brings you to the top of the hill. Once you reach the top, you'll be pleased with the panoramic views of the city and the mountain ranges that extend above them. Santiago seems to be constantly shrouded in a cloud, which gives it a unique lighting and mystery. I opted to take a run to the top via the trail system. It gained about 1,000 feet in less than a mile, so it's definitely a good climb and a nice workout to add to your city stay. Atop the hill is a snowy-white statue of Mary the Virgin, which peacefully watches over the city. Other attractions include an amphitheater, restaurants and coffee shops, and a zoo.
